Fred Kerley, a multiple-time Olympic medalist and World Champion, will not compete at the Grand Slam Track event in Miami after police arrested him on Thursday. The news has sent shock waves across the fans and analysts alike, as Kerley had been expected to be a top contender at the competition.

Police reported that Kerley punched his ex-girlfriend, fellow hurdler Alaysha Johnson, during a dispute at a hotel. They charged Kerley with touch or strike battery and took him into custody.

Kerley, 29, has built a strong reputation in track and field with his speed and multiple medals in the 100m and 400m events. His withdrawal from the Miami meet dealt a significant blow to the competition, which had heavily promoted his participation.

Event organisers confirmed Kerley’s absence shortly after his arrest.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances, Fred Kerley will not be competing at the Grand Slam Track Miami event,” they said in a statement. “We wish him the best and will continue to support all athletes’ safety and well-being.”

This incident marks the second time Kerley has faced legal trouble in South Florida this year. In January, police confronted him during an incident, though they did not file charges at that time. Investigators continue to look into the current case, but officials have not released further details.

Kerley’s fans expressed disappointment and concern on social media. Many hope authorities resolve the case quickly and that Kerley receives the support he needs. Fellow athletes also voiced their support for Johnson and stressed the importance of addressing such issues seriously.

As the investigation proceeds, the track and field community watches closely. The legal proceedings may affect Kerley’s future participation in major events. Meanwhile, the Grand Slam Track event will continue without one of its biggest stars.
