Joshua Cheptegei of Uganda stands at the pinnacle of long-distance running, holding the world record in the 5000 meters with a stunning time of 12:35.36. Set in Monaco in 2020, this record cemented Cheptegei’s status as one of the greatest distance runners of all time.

Meanwhile, Cheptegei’s record-breaking run pushed the boundaries of human endurance and speed, inspiring a new generation of athletes. Not far behind him, Ethiopian star Hagos Gebrhiwet clocked the second-fastest time ever, 12:36.73, at the 2024 Bislett Games in Oslo. Gebrhiwet’s performance showcased Ethiopia’s continued dominance in distance running.

A part of Joshua Cheptegei, the 5000m history also features legendary names, many from East Africa. Ethiopia’s Kenenisa Bekele, who once held the world record, ranks third with a time of 12:37.35. Bekele’s career includes multiple Olympic and World Championship titles, making him a household name in athletics.

Other Ethiopian greats such as Yomif Kejelcha, Haile Gebrselassie, Berihu Aregawi, Telahun Haile Bekele, and Selemon Barega also feature prominently, highlighting the country’s deep talent pool.

Additionally, Kenya’s Daniel Komen remains the fastest Kenyan ever in the 5000m, with a time of 12:39.74. Komen’s remarkable performances in the late 1990s set a high standard for Kenyan runners who followed. Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo, another rising star, clocks in at eighth on the all-time list with 12:40.96, showing that Uganda continues to produce world-class distance runners.

This elite group of athletes has pushed the limits of the 5000m, combining speed, strategy, and stamina. Their performances have thrilled fans worldwide and elevated the status of long-distance track events.

As new talents emerge and training methods evolve, the 5000m promises to remain one of the most exciting and competitive races in athletics. Joshua Cheptegei’s record stands as a beacon, challenging others to chase greatness on the track.
