Guangzhou 25 Draws Top Athletes for World Athletics Relays

The World Athletics Relays Guangzhou 25 will feature a star-studded field as 734 athletes—411 men and 323 women—from 43 federations confirm their participation. Collectively, these athletes have earned an impressive 32 medals at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and 34 medals at the 2023 World Athletics Championships. This underscores the event’s high competitive standard.

Meanwhile, the competition, scheduled for May 10-11, 2025, in Guangzhou, China, will showcase six relay events.  Men’s, women’s, and mixed 4x100m and 4x400m relays. Notably, the mixed 4x100m relay will debut at this championship, adding fresh excitement to the program. All events except the mixed 4x100m serve as qualifiers for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, where the top 14 teams plus the next two fastest within the qualifying window will secure their spots.

Team USA, with 29 athletes including nine Olympians, highlights the calibre of competition. Olympic gold medalists like TeeTee Terry, who dominated the women’s 4x100m relay in Paris, and Kenny Bednarek, a two-time Olympic silver medalist in the men’s 200m, lead the squad. Other notable athletes include Kendall Ellis, Lynna Irby-Jackson, and Courtney Okolo, all bringing Olympic and World Championship relay experience.

Guangzhou 25 will also see Athletics Canada finalise its selection, focusing on qualifying quota places for Tokyo 2025 and aiming for medals, top-eight finishes, and personal bests. The Canadian team will train in Baton Rouge before departing for Guangzhou.

The top athletes entered for the World Athletics Relays Guangzhou 25 include a strong contingent from Team USA, featuring nine Olympians. Key names are Olympic gold medallist Twanisha “TeeTee” Terry, who won the women’s 4x100m relay at Paris 2024, and Kenny Bednarek, a two-time Olympic silver medallist in the men’s 200m.

Other notable US athletes include Kendall Ellis, Lynna Irby-Jackson, Courtney Okolo, and Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Elija Godwin, all bringing extensive relay experience.

Meanwhile, Canada’s team boasts Olympic champions such as Andre De Grasse, Aaron Brown, Jerome Blake, and Brendon Rodney, adding depth and medal-winning potential to the competition.

Additionally, from Africa, Nigeria fields a strong team led by standout athletes Tobi Amusan and Ese Brume. The two have made significant marks on the global stage in sprint hurdles and long jump respectively.

These top athletes highlight the high level of competition expected at Guangzhou 25, where 734 athletes from 43 federations will compete for relay glory and qualification to the 2025 World Athletics Championships.
